"This is a series rendered in oil paint, the historic medium of “serious” western representation. In this piece Wagner is direct with it's statement - embedded in his creation [oil painting] is an unhatched, embryonic world: a tattoo, the lowest class, non-serious, most opposed medium to oil painting. This idea of symbolic conversation is a theme in Wagner’s paintings, this myth suggests that a poke tattoo belongs on a gallery wall - and that even if it only made it there by hiding in oil, one day the world will crack open. And the old hierarchies will disappear."
